Basic Life Support

A Collaboration with the Health and Safety Unit

KTI Achieve, within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes, in collaboration with the Health and Safety Unit, offers Year 10 and Year 11 KTI Achieve students and educators a short course in Certified Basic Life Support Training endorsed by The Malta Resuscitation Council. Basic Life Support training equips students with practical life-saving skills while developing confidence, communication, teamwork, decision-making, responsibility and resilience. It empowers young people to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies, while fostering empathy, active citizenship and a stronger sense of responsibility towards the wellbeing of others.

On successfully completing this certified training, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess a collapsed victim.
  2. Alarm the emergency services.
  3. Perform effective chest compressions.
  4. Safely operate an AED (Automated external defibrillator)
  5. Place an unconscious and breathing person in the recovery position.
  6. Administer first aid for choking

Such courses give KTI Achieve students a valuable combination of practical, personal, social and employability skills. Personal and decision-making skills include remaining calm under pressure, assessing a situation quickly and making appropriate decisions, taking responsibility and acting rather than simply being a bystander, developing confidence in dealing with unexpected situations and problem-solving and thinking logically during an emergency. Students also learn to communicate clearly and confidently with emergency services and to work effectively as part of a team during an emergency whilst giving and following instructions and understanding the importance of cooperation and coordination. In relation to personal development, they increase self-confidence, establish a greater sense of responsibility towards others, develop empathy and a willingness to help, and overcome fear or hesitation when faced with an emergency. They are equipped with transferable skills that are useful in many future workplaces, particularly those involving children, elderly people, customers, healthcare, education, hospitality and public services.

Students are also awarded a certificate valid for three years, issued by the Health and Safety Unit in collaboration with the Malta Resuscitation Council.
