As part of KTI Achieve’s commitment to developing students’ personal, social and employability skills, an intergenerational collaboration has been established with CareMalta, providing secondary school students with meaningful opportunities to engage with older adults and learn from their experiences. The initiative is structured around three mornings of activities, jointly planned and delivered by the participating schools and residential homes. The first morning is organised by the school, with residents visiting the school and actively participating in activities alongside the students. The second morning takes place at the elderly home, where students spend time with residents and participate in activities within their environment. The third activity takes place away from both the school and the residential home, providing students and older adults with an opportunity to interact in a different setting and experience a shared activity together.

Through these encounters, students develop a wide range of skills, including communication, active listening, empathy, patience, respect, compassion, teamwork, cooperation, adaptability, confidence and interpersonal skills. They learn to appreciate different perspectives, experiences and generations, while developing greater awareness of the needs and abilities of others. The activities also promote responsibility, initiative, problem-solving, creativity and organisational skills, as students contribute to planning and carrying out activities. Most importantly, the collaboration strengthens students’ sense of community, social responsibility and inclusion, while helping to reduce generational barriers and fostering meaningful relationships between younger and older members of society.
