Malta National Schools’ Football League: Building the Pathway for School Football

The Malta National Schools’ Football League was launched in 2021 following the recognition of a significant gap in school sport. For several years, the traditional inter-school football leagues had no longer been organised, limiting opportunities for students to participate in structured football competitions. In response to requests from school leaders and educators, the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes issued a circular in May 2021 announcing the reintroduction of a national schools’ football league for primary schools.

From its inception, the initiative aimed to bring together both State and Non-State schools, providing equal opportunities for boys and girls to represent their schools in a structured, inclusive, and competitive environment. The positive response from schools across Malta and Gozo demonstrated the demand for organised school football and highlighted the value of sport in promoting teamwork, discipline, and healthy lifestyles.

The success of the Malta National Schools’ Football League paved the way for a comprehensive football competition structure within the Malta School Games. Today, students from the age of eight to fifteen participate in a well-established programme of football tournaments for both boys and girls, offering a clear pathway for participation, talent development, and sporting excellence.

The continued growth of the initiative, now forming part of the Malta School Games, reflects a strong commitment to providing high-quality sporting opportunities for all students while reinforcing the role of school sport in promoting physical, social, and personal development.
