Ready, Set, Play! – Building Active Learners for Life
Children today are spending less time being physically active than ever before. With more time spent indoors and on screens, schools play an increasingly important role in helping children develop healthy and active lifestyles. The Ready, Set, Play! (RSP) programme was created with this goal in mind, providing primary school learners with regular opportunities to move, play, and develop the basic skills they need to enjoy physical activity throughout their lives.
Designed for pupils from Years 1 to 6, RSP focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through fun, structured, and inclusive activities. Rather than concentrating on specific sports, the programme helps children strengthen the basic building blocks of movement, including agility, balance, and coordination. These skills are essential not only for sport but also for everyday activities, giving children greater confidence in how they move and encouraging them to stay active.
At the heart of RSP is the belief that every child should have the opportunity to participate and succeed, regardless of ability. The programme creates a positive environment where learners can enjoy movement, build confidence, and develop healthy habits from an early age. By making physical activity part of the regular school day, RSP helps children see exercise as something enjoyable rather than something that only happens during PE lessons.
The programme also promotes a whole-school approach to physical activity. While PE teachers lead the sessions, class teachers and Learning Support Educators (LSEs) actively take part by supporting learners, encouraging participation, and helping to ensure activities are carried out safely. This collaborative approach also allows teachers to learn new ideas and activities that they can later use with their own classes, making physical activity a natural part of everyday learning.
To ensure consistency, each class takes part in two 30-minute RSP sessions every week. These sessions complement the school’s General Physical Education programme rather than replacing it, allowing children to benefit from a wider range of physical experiences. Schools are expected to provide suitable indoor or outdoor spaces and the equipment needed so that sessions can continue throughout the year, even when weather conditions prevent outdoor activities.
The programme includes a set of recommended learning outcomes for different age groups. These focus on gradually developing movement skills such as balance, coordination, speed, reaction, rhythm, and movement control through activities drawn from areas such as fundamentals, gymnastics, and athletics. The learning outcomes serve as a guide, while still allowing teachers the flexibility to adapt activities to suit the needs and abilities of their learners.
Ultimately, Ready, Set, Play! is much more than an additional physical activity programme. It is an investment in children’s overall development and well-being. By encouraging regular movement, building confidence, and creating enjoyable experiences, the programme helps children develop the skills and attitudes needed for a healthy, active lifestyle. Through its inclusive and structured approach, RSP lays the foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity, benefiting not only individual learners but also the wider school community.
