What is Physical Education?

Physical Education (PE) is an educational discipline focused on developing physical fitness, motor skills, and the knowledge and habits needed for a lifetime of health and active living.
Rather than just “playing sports,” a modern PE curriculum takes a holistic approach to student development, typically focusing on three main areas:

  • The Physical (Psychomotor): Developing fundamental movement skills, coordination, agility, and overall cardiovascular endurance through games, gymnastics, dance, and traditional sports.
  • The Cognitive: Understanding the rules, strategies, and tactics of various activities, as well as learning the basic principles of anatomy, biomechanics, and nutrition.
  • The Social & Emotional (Affective): Cultivating essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, communication, fair play, and resilience in the face of challenges.

Ultimately, physical education aims to build “physical literacy”—giving individuals the competence and confidence to enjoy a wide variety of physical activities throughout their entire lives.

PE teachers undergo continuous training through Professional Development sessions to enrich their knowledge and keep up to date with modern trends.

Physical Education in Primary Schools

In Maltese primary schools, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of the holistic development of young learners. Over the years, Physical Education has been given greater importance with more resources and time slots being dedicated to it. The primary PE curriculum is designed to foster a positive relationship with movement, physical activity, and sport from an early age, establishing a strong foundation for lifelong physical literacy, health, and well-being. It aims to empower learners to be able to engage in a healthy and active lifestyle through the acquisition of the skills needed.

Rather than focusing on competitive performance, the primary PE experience ensures that every child develops fundamental movement skills, coordination, and teamwork in a supportive and inclusive environment. This is achieved through a diverse, multi-layered approach that blends structured school lessons with national physical activity programs and festivals:

  • Core PE Lessons: Weekly school-based sessions focused on developing basic motor skills, agility, balance, and spatial awareness through gymnastics, dance, athletics, and modified cooperative games. These sessions are structured to cater for learners of all abilities so as to bring the maximum potential out of each learner. These sessions are delivered through 45 minute sessions and are led by specialised PE teachers.
  • The Ready Set Play Programme: A specialised initiative targeting early years and junior cycles, focusing on fundamental movement skills (FMS) through engaging, play-based activities that build physical competence and confidence. This programme is delivered through 30-minute sessions which are organised by specialised PE teachers and led by the class teachers.
  • The Malta School Games (MSG):

A national framework launched in 2025 that introduces primary students to friendly, structured inter-school competition, emphasizing sportsmanship, inclusivity, and teamwork across various sports. Through the MSG, the competitive nature of physical activity is promoted and enhanced to bring out the natural competitive element within learners.

  • National & Regional Sports Festivals: Celebrating active lifestyles, these festivals throughout the scholastic year provide learners with opportunities to experience a wide variety of sporting disciplines, connect with peers from different school colleges, and experience the joy of sport in a non-formal, celebratory setting.

Through this comprehensive framework, Physical Education in Malta empowers primary students with the social, emotional, and physical skills needed to lead active, confident, and healthy lives.
Studying Physical Education (PE) in Malta opens a diverse range of career paths across education, sports management, fitness, and wellness.
