
The Sport Career Development Programme (SCDP) is an educational programme offered in Malta, designed to nurture the potential of students who have an interest and aptitude in sports. The programme aims to develop both athletic skills and academic achievement, supporting learners who may wish to pursue a career in sport —either as athletes or in related fields.
Key Features of SCDP
- Target Group: The programme is available to students starting from Year 7 (typically age 11–12) and can be started and / or continued as an option subject from Year 9 onwards.
- Curriculum: SCDP replaces subjects such as Art, Design & Technology, Home Economics, and Music in Year 7, allowing students to focus on sports-specific training and core fitness.
- Sports Offered: The range of sports varies by college and school, including athletics, basketball, football, dance, gymnastics and more.
- Assessment: Entry into the programme requires a practical assessment in the chosen sport. Students who continue the programme and meet the required standards are awarded accredited certificates at different MQF (Malta Qualifications Framework) levels.
- Progression: Learners who achieve an MQF Level 3 Accreditation Certificate can use it to further their studies at various post-secondary institutions, such as MCAST, ITS, and several sixth forms and colleges.

- First Aid & Injury Prevention: Basic first aid training for sports injuries. Learn injury prevention techniques.
- Nutrition for Athletes: Understand how nutrition improves performance. Learn which foods enhance training results.
- Anti-Doping Awareness: Learn about doping dangers and the importance of fair play. Understand the harm doping causes to athletes and sports.
